Every cemetery sets its own rules on foundations, size and what may be installed, and a memorial that breaks them is refused at the gate. We install in 205 Ohio cemeteries and publish the full requirements for 18 of them.

Before you choose a design

Six things a cemetery can dictate

Families are usually shown granite colours first and told about the rules last. It should be the other way round. These are the six that decide what your memorial can actually be. Every example below is quoted from a cemetery's own published regulations.

Foundations

A monument is defined as a marker attached to a foundation that includes the name and dates of an individual.

Size limits

The size of the foot stone cannot be larger than 28 inches in length by 14 inches in width.

What is permitted

The top of the stone must be level with the ground (considered a flush marker).

Approval before we carve

A companion monument (any monument centered on one or more grave spaces with two or more names on it) will be considered one monument for each grave space it was designed to mark.

Who may set the memorial

Bud vases may be installed on mausoleum crypts and columbarium niches, only by Cemetery Staff or a monument company hired by Cemetery Staff.

Fees

If a monument company cannot be coordinated with to handle the opening/closing, the cemetery staff may handle opening/closing at the cost of a cremains burial with respect to the time of service.

Decoration and plantings

Decorating of niche fronts is not permissible.

We confirm the current rules in writing with the cemetery office before we carve, every time, because they are revised and a refused memorial is a cost no family should absorb.
