Worthington families are usually working to one specific set of rules, and most people do not find that out until after they have chosen a memorial. Walnut Grove Cemetery on Milton Avenue is run by the City, and the same regulations govern Flint Cemetery. They are more prescriptive than most grounds in Franklin County. There is a minimum stone thickness, a required foundation, and firm limits on how large a companion monument may be. We read those rules before we draw anything.
What Walnut Grove and Flint require
Both cemeteries require every monument to be at least four inches thick and set on a foundation whose size and type the Superintendent has approved. A companion monument is capped in all three dimensions, and a footstone cannot exceed 28 inches by 14 inches. Where footstones are permitted at all, they must sit flush with the ground. Estate lot monuments go to the Cemetery Trustees for approval before any work begins.
None of that is unusual for a municipal cemetery, but it does mean a design that would pass without comment elsewhere in the Columbus area can be turned away here. We confirm the current requirements in writing with the cemetery office before we carve, every time. Rules are revised, and a memorial refused at the gate is a cost no family should absorb.
