About Schoedinger Funeral Home Columbus, OH
Philip Schoedinger left Dörrenbach, Germany, for the United States in 1829. By trade as a craftsman, Philip established a business constructing caskets in 1855. Philip opened Schoedinger & Brown in 1865 on Columbus’ West State Street.
George J. and J. Albert, Philip’s sons, soon joined the family business. Soon after, the funeral home started to see new developments including the addition of the first motor hearse and a new chapel at 229 E. State St., which was the first chapel constructed specifically for funeral services and one of the first of such stature in America. At this location, a city landmark is still the bell tower. Other firsts quickly followed, including being among the first businesses to provide air-conditioned premises and the first to provide assured advance funeral preparations.
Later, Fred and George R., two of George J.’s sons, decided to work at the family funeral home, which was then called Schoedinger & Co. The three sons of George R., George Jr., Robert, and John all joined the family firm in 1933.
The Schoedinger family’s goal to provide more services and more convenience to the families of Central Ohio developed along with the funeral home. The Schoedingers established their Hilltop Chapel on West Broad Street in 1950, and the Northwest Chapel in Upper Arlington was added in 1961. Following were Linden, Grove City, and Reynoldsburg.
As part of the growth of the Schoedinger brand’s dedication to reasonably priced funerals and cremations, the Schoedinger facilities in Hilltop and Linden were rebranded as Heart & Hope Funeral Homes by Schoedinger in 2016. The Grove City funeral home was moved in the years that followed, and a new one in Dublin was inaugurated.
The funeral, cremation, and cemetery service provider Dignity Memorial welcomed Schoedinger Funeral & Cremation Service and Heart & Hope Funeral Home by Schoedinger in 2021.
